During a talk at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Huang recounted his youth when he met Lori Mills at Oregon State University. At just 17 years old, Huang was the youngest in their class, while Mills was two years older. Despite the odds, Huang charmed Mills with humor and confidence, telling her:

“Do you want to do your homework together? I’ll help you get an A.”

One of the key issues he highlighted was AI “illusion”, where models generate answers that seem credible but lack accuracy. Huang stressed that while AI can now produce the best possible answers, they still require human verification.

“We need to reach a point where AI answers are largely trustworthy,” he said. “But that’s still a few years away. Until then, we must continue improving computational capabilities.”

The Three Stages of AI Development

Huang outlined the steps in AI’s evolution:

– Pre-Training: Similar to attending college, AI consumes massive datasets to acquire knowledge. While significant, Huang noted this stage alone isn’t sufficient.

– Post-Training: AI hones specific skills using techniques like reinforcement learning, human feedback, and synthetic data.

– Test Time Scaling: This phase, likened to “thinking,” involves iterative problem-solving and simulation to generate higher-quality answers.

“The longer AI ‘thinks,’ the better the results,” Huang explained.

Why Nvidia Chips Are Still Expensive

Addressing a question about Nvidia’s costly GPUs, Huang quipped:

“Without Nvidia, running AI would be a million times more expensive. Over the past decade, we’ve essentially discounted it by a million times—so it’s practically free!”
