Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Secures A-List Headliners With Unexpected Royal Ties
Prince Harry’s Invictus Games is gearing up for a spectacular opening ceremony, featuring a star-studded lineup personally curated by the Duke of Sussex himself. The highly anticipated event will see global music icons Chris Martin, the frontman of Coldplay, and pop sensation Katy Perry taking center stage, setting the tone for an unforgettable week of competition and camaraderie.
This year’s Invictus Games, scheduled to take place from February 8 to 16, will unfold against the stunning backdrop of Vancouver and Whistler in Canada. For the first time in the event’s history, winter sports will be included, adding a fresh and exhilarating dimension to the games. Events like alpine skiing, snowboarding, wheelchair curling, and para ice hockey will join traditional sports such as wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball, offering wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women new opportunities to showcase their resilience and strength.
The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, have always been about more than just sports. The competition provides a platform for veterans and active service members from around the world to demonstrate their perseverance and adaptability. With the addition of winter sports, this year’s games aim to broaden participation and inspire even more veterans to take part.
In a recent statement, Prince Harry expressed his excitement: “The introduction of winter sports is a significant milestone for the Invictus Games. It opens up new avenues for recovery and showcases the unwavering spirit of our servicemen and women. I couldn’t be prouder of this year’s lineup and the athletes who will take part.”
The choice of Chris Martin and Katy Perry as headliners has already generated substantial buzz among fans. Martin, known for his soulful performances, is expected to deliver a heartfelt set, while Perry, with her vibrant energy and chart-topping hits, promises to bring a lively and celebratory atmosphere to the ceremony.
In addition to the musical performances, the opening ceremony will include moving stories from athletes and veterans, as well as appearances by dignitaries and advocates for veterans’ rights. The event will be broadcast by ITV in the UK, ensuring millions can join in the celebration and support the competitors.
With a blend of star power, inspiring sportsmanship, and the breathtaking winter setting of Vancouver and Whistler, this year’s Invictus Games are shaping up to be a historic event. The Duke of Sussex’s continued dedication to veterans’ causes and his hands-on involvement in planning the games underline the heart and purpose behind this extraordinary international competition.
Star-Studded Performances at the Opening Ceremony
Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin will take center stage at BC Place in Vancouver on February 8. He will be joined by an all-star lineup, including Katy Perry, Nelly Furtado, Noah Kahan, and Roxanne Bruneau.
According to Robyn McVicker, Chief Operating Officer of the Games, Prince Harry had significant input in selecting the headlining acts. Speaking to People magazine, McVicker said, “We’ve been thrilled to work with him on the approach to the ceremonies. We’ve kept him posted about shortlists and what we’re discussing. He’s had direct input.”
The Invictus website also confirmed Martin’s involvement, stating that his performance will “celebrate hope, resilience, courage, and the unconquered Invictus Spirit at the heart of the Games.”
Chris Martin, 47, has a long-standing connection to the event, having composed the Invictus Games anthem in 2014, which continues to be used during medal ceremonies.

A Royal Connection Among Performers
Both Chris Martin and Katy Perry have previously performed for members of the British royal family. Coldplay headlined the inaugural Earthshot Prize ceremony in 2021, an event spearheaded by Prince William, where the band’s performance was powered by 60 bicycles to maintain a completely carbon-neutral set.
Katy Perry, on the other hand, took the stage at King Charles’s coronation concert in May 2023, where she entertained a crowd of 20,000 at Windsor Castle. Prior to her performance, Prince William expressed his excitement about seeing her live. Reflecting on the event, Perry shared her gratitude, saying, “I got to bring my mom and stay in a castle!”
Beyond their professional ties, Perry and her husband, Orlando Bloom, are close neighbors of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Montecito, California. Their friendship further strengthens the bond between the royal family and the performers set to grace the Invictus stage.

Additional Performers and ITV Partnership
Nelly Furtado, another key performer at the opening ceremony, shares a history with Prince Harry. In 2007, she was invited to perform at the Concert for Diana, honoring the late Princess of Wales. Recalling the experience, she once said, “I met Prince William and Prince Harry, and they were so sweet.”
Joining the lineup is breakout star Noah Kahan, known for his hit Stick Season, and Canadian pop sensation Roxane Bruneau. Their performances are expected to add an extra layer of excitement to the opening ceremony.
In a significant move, the Invictus Games Foundation recently announced ITV as the UK broadcast partner. A statement on the foundation’s website highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “This exciting partnership will bring the inspirational stories and extraordinary athleticism of the Games to audiences across the UK, celebrating the resilience and determination of wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans.”

The Healing Power of Sport
Prince Harry has long championed the transformative power of sports. In a heartfelt video message shared on the official Invictus Games account, he stated, “Sport has the ability to heal, to change lives, and to save lives.”
“For so many of these competitors, getting to the start line has been one of the hardest moments of their life. But at the Games, their lives are changed. Watching these magical moments unfold, with sport as the catalyst, is incredibly special for all of us to witness.”
Last summer, Harry personally praised the 64-strong squad set to represent Team UK at the Invictus Games, consisting of 60 competitors and four reserves. The squad will take part in a variety of events, showcasing their resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit.
With a stellar lineup, high-profile performances, and a powerful message of perseverance, the 2025 Invictus Games promise to be an unforgettable event, inspiring audiences worldwide.
