Selena Gomez Hints at Stepping Away from Music After ‘Emilia Pérez’ Success
Selena Gomez has sparked major speculation about her future in the music industry after revealing that her experience filming ‘Emilia Pérez’ has shifted her focus entirely to acting. The 32-year-old singer and actress made the statement during a conversation with Dave Karger at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 9, where she expressed her deep passion for acting and filmmaking.

Selena Gomez’s Growing Passion for Acting
During the event, Selena Gomez admitted that working on ‘Emilia Pérez’, a French-produced, Spanish-language musical, has been a transformative experience for her. The film, directed by the acclaimed Jacques Audiard, has become one of the biggest award-season contenders, earning 13 Academy Award nominations, the most of any film this year.
“I think film and art-making and being around such incredible, talented people that have done nothing but uplift me along the way… I don’t know,” Gomez shared. “It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this.”
Her performance in the film, alongside stars like Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, marks her first major acting role since voicing Mavis in ‘Hotel Transylvania 4’ (2022). Despite recent controversies surrounding her co-star Gascón, Gomez remains deeply proud of her work on the film, calling the experience “cathartic and career-defining.”
Is Selena Gomez Retiring from Music?

Although Selena Gomez has not officially announced her retirement from music, her statement suggests that she may be stepping away from the industry. Her last musical release, ‘Love On’ (2024), was a hit, but she has not confirmed any upcoming albums or projects.
For years, the Only Murders in the Building star has balanced both acting and music, but it seems her heart now belongs to film. She shared that the film’s director trusted her completely, allowing her to “prove she’s capable of more” and hopes this is “just the beginning” of a new chapter in her career.
Award Recognition and Future Projects
As ‘Emilia Pérez’ continues its award-season success, Selena Gomez and her co-stars are nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards 2025, which will be streamed on Netflix on February 23.
While she remains proud of her musical accomplishments, fans may have to accept that their favorite pop star is now fully embracing the world of film and television.
Could this truly be the end of her music career? Only time will tell.
