DMX Was Almost Hip-Hop’s First Billionaire Despite Financial Missteps, Says Ex-Wife

DMX was on the verge of becoming Hip-Hop’s first billionaire during the peak of his career, according to his ex-wife, Tashera Simmons.

In a recent interview with Carlos King, Simmons—who shares four children with the late rap icon—reflected on DMX’s financial success and the business decisions that impacted his wealth.

DMX’s Massive Earnings at His Peak

Simmons revealed just how much money DMX was making at his height, stating: “I remember looking at our bank accounts and the zeros wouldn’t stop. I’m not even exaggerating. He got $10 million per movie, made millions per show, and when he went on tour, he would come back with so much money.”

She emphasized that they were very close to reaching billionaire status, with DMX generating immense wealth through music, films, and tours.

Missed Business Opportunities and Costly Decisions

Despite his earnings, Simmons admitted that DMX lacked business acumen and made questionable financial decisions. One of the biggest missed opportunities was turning down a Barclays Center investment alongside JAY-Z. “They called and said, ‘Jay is in. They wanna know if you wanna put in $1 million to get in,’” Simmons recalled. “Unfortunately, X didn’t see it as a good investment. I saw it, and I didn’t even have a lot of business sense.”

She lamented that bad financial decisions played a role in DMX’s struggles later in life.

DMX’s Generosity and Lavish Spending

While his business decisions may have been flawed, DMX’s generosity was unmatched. According to Simmons: “He spent a lot of money … taking care of everyone. If someone died, he’d pay for their funeral. He would go on vacation, rent out an entire hotel, and spend over $150,000 a day.”

His charitable nature, coupled with lavish spending habits, led to financial instability despite his immense earnings.

Financial Struggles in His Later Years

Despite selling millions of records and starring in hit movies, DMX faced severe financial troubles during the last decade of his life. He filed for bankruptcy three times and was sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud, owing over $2 million in restitution.

When he tragically passed away in 2021 due to a cocaine-induced heart attack, DMX left behind no will and significant debt.

DMX’s Legacy Lives On

Although questions remain about his financial estate, DMX’s legacy continues to thrive. His estate recently partnered with Artist Legacy Group (ALG) to ensure his music endures for future generations.

His fiancée, Desiree Lindstrom, and daughter, Sasha Simmons, who co-manage his estate, are confident that ALG will preserve DMX’s influence in hip-hop. “Sasha and I believe ALG is the right team to honor Earl’s music and legacy. For my son and all of Earl’s children and fans, we will keep his spirit alive,” Lindstrom stated.

With this new partnership, DMX’s legendary career and contributions to hip-hop will continue to inspire fans worldwide.
