Miley Cyrus denies copying Bruno Mars’ song for the Grammy-winning track “Flowers”
Pop star Miley Cyrus has officially denied allegations that her Grammy-winning hit “Flowers” copied Bruno Mars’ 2012 ballad “When I Was Your Man.”
Legal Defense Against Copyright Claims
According to court documents obtained by People, Cyrus’ legal team dismissed the copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Tempo Music Investments in September 2024. They argued that Tempo only partially owns “When I Was Your Man” through co-writer Philip Lawrence and lacks exclusive ownership rights.
Cyrus’ lawyers further noted that the song’s other co-writers, Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt, are not affiliated with Tempo. They argued, “Only exclusive copyright holders can file an infringement lawsuit.”
Additionally, the pop star’s legal team stated that Tempo, as a non-exclusive co-owner, lacks the legal standing to pursue this case. They have formally requested the court dismiss the lawsuit.

The Allegations
Tempo Music Investments alleged that “Flowers” shares “numerous musical similarities” with Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man”—including its melody, harmonies, chord progressions, and chorus. They also claimed that Cyrus intentionally drew inspiration from another Mars track, “Talking to the Moon,” although that song is not included in the lawsuit.
Despite the accusations, “Flowers” has achieved tremendous success, winning Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Miley’s Response to Grammy Win
Accepting her Grammy, Miley Cyrus reflected on the honor, saying, “This award is incredible, but I hope it doesn’t change anything in my life. Life is beautiful as it is. Not everyone gets a Grammy, but everyone is amazing, and that’s what matters.”

The Meaning Behind “Flowers”
“Flowers” is widely believed to address Cyrus’ failed marriage to actor Liam Hemsworth. The couple married in 2018 but separated in 2020. Cyrus released the track on January 12, 2023, just hours before Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday.
What’s Next?
As the case unfolds, Miley Cyrus continues to defend her creative process while celebrating the enduring impact of “Flowers.” Whether or not the lawsuit is dismissed, the track’s success has already cemented its place as a defining hit in her career.
